How do you keep a ferret's collar on? I want to be able to let her roam around the house a little more (of course, I have "ferret-proofed" it). But she's a small ferret and her collar, which is made for ferrets, doesn't stay on her well, since ferrets hardly have necks. How do I keep the bell collar on her so I can hear her around the house? I don't want to do it too tight, but how much is too tight?

Just a thought.
I wouldn't. They run around and get into some little spots. Your ferret could get caught up on something and get stuck or really hurt.

If I were you I would get it a harness and put a bell on the harness. They stay on and the ferret wont be able to hang it self or something.

If she is small then it may just not stay on. Females are so small even ones for ferrets are not always reliable. You should be able to turn the colar and have a bit of room. However I would not leave it on her because she will be growing and it can get caught on anything and really hurt her. We have 5 ferrets among other pets and we don't cage at all. I think that if you are just letting her out that you could use a treat bag noise to bring her to you. We also have 2 deaf ferrets so of course that doesn't work for them. Let her out and make her a bed somewhere hidden, she should end up there if she is wanting to nap before you put her back. Please make sure you let her out as much as possible because ferrets are not caged animals. People cage for their convenience and not the ferrets. Since they are smarter than cats and dogs they do require alot of time out. The more you have her out the less crazy they are and the more like cats/ dogs they become. Our kids are just like dogs. Pierre is a winner from last month and Templeton is in the contest this month. Also, you should join American Ferret Associtation in yahoo groups, there is also one for ferret health there too. Do you just have the one ferret? How old is she? They really do better when they have a buddy to play, snuggle and roll with. Good luck, you can make it a bit tighter if you make sure you remove it when you put her back in the cage. Adjust as needed.

hmmm. i have 13 ferrets. (yes 13 i typed it right) and some of them will 'death roll' out of every collar you put on them. since shes so little it may very well just not stay on her yet. generally too tight is when you cant fit your finger under the collar and make sure you can spin it on her neck. (two fingers and they will roll out of it), but go by how she is reacting. harnesses have never worked for me. my ferrets will roll to no end if i try putting one on them, and i have never seen one get stuck by the collar. if a collar wont go as tight as you need it because she is so small try sewing it to be smaller so that it will. (but keep in mind she is getting bigger and you cant adjust it if you do this) she will eventually get used to having the collar on her if you can get it to stay on her, but she may be uncomfortable in it at first. hope this helped and wasnt too confusing. im bad at explaining sometimes =D, and if you are worried about her getting stuck know this, ferrets (mine especially) will find a way to get into just about everything. cabinets, drawers, closet, even on the top shelf of a closet and i have never had a problem with it though. if collars were that big of a problem they probably wouldnt sell them anymore. but this is all just from my experience with the little guys.

Collars can be dangerous. If caught on something your ferret may strangle or break it's neck struggling to become free. I would not recommend keeping a collar on an unsupervised ferret. A harness is a better alternative but again I would not recommend it be left on an unsupervised ferret.

Sugar, the collar is not going to work. Ferrets need to wear harnesses. Take her to the pet store and ask them to help you fit her for a harness. This is what I'm talking about: http://www.ferretcouture.co.uk/Diamante-Sets.asp Not all of them come with jewels on them, you can get plain nylon too. Best of luck to you! Take care.

Personally I don't go for the collars. Poor little guys...those collars are like torture devices! :)

Rule of thumb for all animals is that you should be able to stick 2 fingers between the collar and the animals neck.
