There are two types of dukes, royal dukes and hereditary dukes. No the daughter of a duke or duchess would never be raise to the rank duchess. She always stay Lady Grace. The eldest son of a duke will take on the tile Duke.

Example the Duke of Moorland has three children
Lady Jane, Lady Sarah and son the Marquis of Leeland

The duke and the duchess is killed. The Marquis of Leeland become the new duke of Moorland. But the two daughters still have the title lady but unless one of them marry a man of higher rank we say a duke or prince etc. Put it simple females do not inhert the family title. It runs on the male line.

ROYAL Dukes and Duchess are usually related to the monarch and closer to the throne,an example being The Duke of Rothesay and Cornwall, more commonly known as Charles,Prince of Wales.Royal Dukes,Duchesses,Marquesses, et cetera, are higher up in the line of precedence than just plain Dukes and Duchesses(royalty versus aristocracy).
A Duke and Duchess's children are known by different titles;the heir apparent, usually the eldest son may assume the next title down that the father possesses. So the Duke of Cornwall's eldest son can be called the Earl of Carrick, the Duke's next title down.Younger sons and daughters are addressed as Lord/Lady Given Name Surname.A woman only assumes the title of Duchess if she is the heir presumptive, the only heir.
Non-royal dukes and duchesses are addressed by title: His/Her Grace,The Duke/Duchess of--
My Lord Duke of Your Grace,Madam or Your Grace.

Answer: At least in the case of the Duke of York, not very far.

The Duke of York, Earl of Inverness, and Baron Killyleagh, a.k.a. Prince Andrew, is fourth in line for the throne, immediately following Prince William and Prince Harry, who, of course, follow the heir apparent, Charles, Prince of Wales. Andrew's oldest daughter, Princess Beatrice of York (1988-), and then his youngest daughter, Princess Eugenie of York (1990-) follow him. Next comes Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, followed by his daughter, Lady Louise Windsor.

Ordinarily, dukes of royal blood follow the reigning monarch's younger sons. For example, Elizabeth II's father, also the Duke of York, Earl of Inverness, and Baron Killyleagh, became George VI, after his older brother, Edward VIII, abdicated to married twice-divorced Wallis Simpson. Duchess is ordinarily a courtesy title for the Duke's wife. For example, Sarah Ferguson until her divorce was Duchess of York.

In England, daughters ordinarily don't succeed to any hereditary titles unless there are no male heirs because of the order of promogeniture, meaning both titles and property pass through the male line with only the oldest son inheriting both while the property is entailed. If the title is held in abeyance, even then the daughter doesn't succeed to the peerage. A daughter of a duke cannot become a duchess unless she, in turn, marries a duke or a marquis, who will eventually succeed to his father's title.

Generally a Duke's daughters will be Lady unless they marry a man of higher rank. There are some titles that can be passed down the female line e.g. The Earl of Mounbatten's title was inherited by his oldest daughter and she will pass it on to her son.

However.Dukedoms can only pass down the male line and if a man has only daughters it will pass to the closest male relative.

There are two kinds of dukes and duchesses. One is hereditary - that is, if your daddy is an hereditary duke because his daddy had the title, when he dies, you become a duke. The other is appointed and it is not passed on.
