The Simpsons takes place in the fictional American town of Springfield, without any geographical coordinates or references to U.S. states that might identify what part of the country it represents. Nevertheless, fans have tried to determine the the town's location by taking the town's characteristics, surrounding geography, and nearby landmarks as clues. As a response, the show has become intentionally deceptive in regard to Springfield's location. Commentators have suggested, and then ruled out, nearly every U.S. state and region as the basis for Springfield. [29] Only once, in season 11, did an episode "Behind the Laughter", describe the Simpsons as a "Northern Kentucky family". However, there are many counterexamples to contradict this statement, so it acts merely as a teaser for increasingly curious fans. Groening has said that Springfield has much in common with Portland, Oregon, the city where he grew up[30]. The name "Springfield" is a common one in America and appears in over half of the states.[31] Springfield's geography, and that of its surroundings, contain coastlines, deserts, vast farmland, tall mountains, or whatever the story or joke requires.[32
The uncertain location of Springfield is a running gag in the series, based on the fact that 34 states in the United States have at least one community with that name.

I think alwaysmoose is right. I always suspected Oregon, even though not telling us the state is a running joke with the writers. Why Oregon? Besides what AM cited, Springfield is by an ocean that the sun sets over. It snows every year, sometimes they get epic snowstorms (that eliminates California) Mount Springfield is most likely Mount Hood. I came up with other reasons that escape me at the moment because it's too early, and I stayed up all night cursing at my T.V after that Sopranos ending.

It is an ongoing joke on the show that they do not specify a state. They just talk about Springfield. There is a rumor that they might reveal the state in the upcoming movie.

They don't live in an identifiable state. There's a whole group of people who track the episodes trying to figure out what state the SImpsons are in, but thus far, all they've found are contradictions. Here's the link:

It's a fictional state called North Tacoma.
Clues would suggest that it is Oregon though. Matt Groening is from Portland and many characters are based off of streets in Portland. Terwilliger, Quimby, Lovejoy, Flanders, Kearney.

they never do specify, and no it is not illinois (that's the real life springfield), its a joke like in the halloween special when homer clones himself and the family is at washington deciding how to get rid of all the clones (where they show the map with homer heads and springfield). but there is an episode where they legalize gay marriage and there is only one state that allows that
