I know rubbing compound can work for scratches on the metal parts like doors and hoods, but im not sure that would work on plastic. I know i probably cant get the physical scratches themselves out, but right now they are a lighter color because of the exposed unpainted plastic

Stop by your local auto parts store.They will help you with a bottle of special cleaner and sealer to be used on plastic.This will make the area look 100% better.

dear brian the first of all check if you car paint in base coat clear coat if that is the case and the scratches are light like you say get white rubbing compound is milder then regular rubbing compound get a piece of towel and rubbed in the area until is hot or the scratches are gone wipe the rubbing compound excess then hit it with some regular wax
