Well he can't be the third if there never was a "the second." I wouldn't do Jr. either b/c that's kind of a father/son thing. You could do "the second," but I personally would leave off the whole ending part.

Depends. You didn't specify if you're giving him the same exact name as your father -- in which case he'd technically be John Robert Doe, III -- or the same exact name as YOU (in which case he'd be a Jr. and your father's name, since different, doesn't come into play).
It really depends on the names in question.

I think if it were me, I would stick with naming him after you, with Jr. at the end.
Or even naming him after your father, with nothing at the end would be a nice way to honor your dad!

Well if you have a different name than your father then he cant be the 3rd - there was no second. If you give him your name he would be a junior (or the 2nd whichever you prefer).

Your son will NOT be a JR nor a III unless you legally change your name to your father's name. Then YOU would be the JR and he would be the "III" .

I would say to just leave off the ending. Give him your fathers name and leave it at that.

Because there was a skipped generation there would be no suffix for the name. He would be a namesake for your father.

my family had a similar incident. my great grandfather name was "george", my grandfather's name is george jr. i have a uncle who is also named george but has a different middle name and my grandparents opted not to call him "george III" cause technically his is not. i wouldnt call ur baby jr cause he is not a jr unless he gets ur name. my uncles name is just that. no suffix applied

your child can't be Junior unless he is named exactually after you. He can't be...the 3rd because there wasn't a second.
If you want to name it after your dad, then your son will be.........the 2nd. But make sure the name is exactually the same as your dads. Also, if you want him to be Jr. Then name him exactually after yourself.

I don't know true etiquette, but my thought would be that he's the third. You were supposed to be the third but weren't, so technically, he is. Just a flagrant guess though...
