Sh** truthfully I am asking to see what yall like. Here's mine . . .
1. TuPac - Obvious choice, his CD's were incredible. I could bang his CDs from beginning to end (for the most part). His music was INFLUENTIAL (damn I miss that kind of music).
2. Eminem - hah I know I will get a lot of criticism for this but got damn listen to this man's lyrics and the way he rhymes. I know he tweaked and made some bad songs (like go crazy), but overall he puts it down.
3.Jay-Z - I wasn't too crazy about him until the Black Album. Reasonable Doubt was a classic; The Blueprint was pretty good; Roc La Fam was aiiight;
4. Biggie - Overrated, but he could definitely lay it down.
5. Twista - haha I'm from Chicago I can't help it. Listen to his tracks before he became "popular"

Honorable Mention: T.I.!!!!! Listen to Trap Muzik and you'll understand

You are stupid for saying Biggie is overrated. You obviously never listened to all of his songs on all 3 of his albums. Ready To Die is a classic!

No particular order...

Nas
Notorious B.I.G.
Rakim
KRS-One
Talib Kweli (I am a HUGE Talib fan, I have every CD and mixtape he has ever dropped)

I'm not going to get into why I they are my top 5. Their names speak for themselves.

Honorable Mention...
Tupac
Run DMC
Big Pun
Big L
Jay-Z
Common
Outkast

Rapper's you probably never heard of and you should listen to...
Little Brother
Black Milk
Devin The Dude
Joe Budden (everyone has heard of him but he is definitely underrated)

Edit
timtim3006:
Biggie had 3 albums not 2. Ready To Die, Life After Death, Born Again.

1. Ice Cube- He wrote all the lyrics for NWA and Eazy-E and made them a huge hit. He also had a huge solo career, the best gangsta rap artist in the game. Had he stuck to rap he would still would be on top, but his movies are great too.

2. Tupac- Was just starting to see the light on a promising career when he was killed. He should have stuck to being a rapper instead of a gangsta. If he has done a song with Cube it would have been off the charts.

3. Scarface- The true King of the South. He put southern gangsta rap on the charts with the Geto Boys and he also was a great solo artist.

4. Rakim- One of the best lyricist that ever lived. He is one of the only rappers that can come off the shelf after a 12 years and contribute to a hit song.

5. LL Cool J- Has done more than 12 albums, and has been in the game for 20 years since his first album dropped in 1985. He is a true warrior of the rap game.

A good rapper is gauged by the work that he or she has done over a short period.
An Exceptional rapper has stood the test of time and is still in the game delievering hits.

If you haven't done 5 great albums in the rap game you don't deserve to be mentioned.

1. Biggie - he was the king. His beats were sick and his metaphors and voice was all about gangsta rap. Tupac was alright too.

2. Big L - His freestyling and his flow were amazing. He could rap forever and sound great. Listen to the 7 minute freestyle him and jay-z do. He raps like crazy while jay-z can't handle the long freestyles.

3. Mac Dre - He was one of the founders of bay area rap. He basically represents a whole genre of rap. He even has an ecstasy pill named after him (white mac dre's... they make u roll so hard)

4. Dr. Dre - From NWA to producing, everything dre has done has turned into fire. His beats, his raps, his entourage (snoop, eminem, NWA, etc) alll turned into platinum records. Everything he touches is gold

5. Andre Nickatina - Not many know Andre Nickatina. His most famous song is probably "Ayo for Yayo", but in my opinion, there are at least 30 songs better than that. He's been in the rap game for a long time, and he lays out real rap. Equipto is good too. listen to him.

1-JAY Z the greatest pound for pound rapper. lyrices/storytelling/dance music/thinking music/sales/ no one has done it better and for as long as he has. lets all be real like him or not jay z is the king of rap. and he has done all of it on his own

2-EMINEM take all his records and just listen to the way he put them togather. his lyrices are only second to jay z. he can make words rhyme that you thought could not.

3-LL COOL J he has been arouind longer then any one. he has stayed on top longer than any one his hall of fame career has him battleing against the all time greats and him comeing out on top.

4- BIGGIE for some one who only had to records to be in everyones top 5 he has to be great. his lyrices is 3rd all time. his storytelling is second to slick rick (jayz is 3rd) and he did this with 2 cds and some mix tapes

5-DMX i think dmx has the greatest 1st album of all time (its dark and hell is hot) from the start he was great. he is the only artist ever in any genre to have 2 albums go 1 and 2 on the billbord 200. (at the end of 1998 its dark was #2 and flesh os my flesh was #1 at the same time) he is the only rap artist to have 5 cds start #1 on the billboard charts every time the cds come out. he is great on mixtapes

honorable mention busta rhymes great rapper funny and has been around since the early 90s and still has hits
tupac was highly overrated. to think some one can get away with lying to us all is sad. he was not a thug. he went to a privete school an art school with jada pinket smith and did the humpty dance with digital underground. he was not a thug untill he went with dr dre and surge knight. that is sad
ja rule lied about him being a thug and everyone laughed at him but tupac was great yeah right
