Ralfcoder and your teacher are incorrect. Your credit score does not consider your income, nor whether the income is steady or not. Your credit score does consider whether you pay bills from your reported accounts on time, how much of your available credit you use and how old your accounts are.

However, there is a scoring system for checking accounts that is called Chexsystems. If you have derogatory checking account items, like NSF checks, Chexsystems will track those. If you Chexsystems score is bad enough, you won't be able to open a checking account..

Being able to show a regular flow of steady income, and a history of paying your bills WILL help your credit score. A checking account will help do this.

Of course, you do have to have the income, and you do have to pay your bills on time. It's not just that you have a checking account, it's that you use it correctly and responsibly.
