Murders, arsons, school killings, I could go on and on. What do you believe is the deterioration of our society?

People do not want to talk about God and about following His instructions. Humans are imperfect, and we make mistakes all the time. Without God to guide us, we are just a bunch of emotions waiting to explode.

I believe that the deterioration of our modern world is due basically to lack of morals and lack of fear of God.

We have lost compassion and respect towards others. We (meaning society as a whole) have become very selfish and will go to extremes to get what we want, when we want.

I think a lot of it has to do with the way our children are raised today. Years ago, children were taught to respect others or be take out to the woodshed. Now, children rule the world. It's the children that tell the parents what to do. And I think that may have to do with parents feeling guilty because they are not able to be full time parents. They both must go out and ear a living, which the children are left alone. Also the feeling of guilt because of divorce. I know I felt very guilty when I left my children and had to work. So in order to make up for the guilt I felt, I spoiled them and bought them things instead of teaching them things I should have.

If I EVER talked to either of my parents the way I hear kids talk to their parents today, (and the way my kids talk to me) I would have gotten the switch! Disrespect or mouthing off just wasn't tolerated years ago.

I'm not saying that physically disciplining children is okay, but you can discipline without hitting. DISCIPLINE IS MISSING.

One problem is that both parents work and are not their full time for their kids. They let video games,TV,and computers do the babysitting.Kids don't go outside and play, they are lazy, obese and demanding,as the love of family is missing.
The fact that we are at war now and these crazy terrorist are making headlines all over does not give young people any hope either. What is the point we are all going to die anyways.
That was also the philosiphy when I was young and the Vietnam war had gone on for 14yrs,and guess what we are still here,I mean us as a race of people. We need hope for our children and more positive influences for them to get ahead.
I don't know how much help I am or even if I am right, just my opinion!

In order to see anything clearly, it needs to be put into perspective. The violent crime rate in the US in the 1880's was much higher than it is now (think of all those shootouts in westerns - that's the way it really was). In the South about 1900 there were many, many lynchings, and almost all of them went unpunished. Lynchings hardly ever occur anymore.
School killings seem to be unique to our period. They are difficult to explain. Easy access to handguns is part of the problem; a narcissistic desire for infamy is another part.
The US is one of the most violent countries in the world. Sad, but true. However, Colombia and Brazil are much worse off. Britain has many of the same problems that the US has, but the British are better behaved. Finding out the reasons takes a lot of work.

Lack of family values and morals. The two-income family destroyed the family as we once knew with less time raising and teaching our children what is right and wrong, and diagnosing a problem before it became one. Then with everyone out only for themselves combined with the above and our infrastructure fell apart with no apparent close solutions to fix this. We are truly a product of our own society. TV just about all but killed us by itself.

I think it started with the Cold War. Because the government cracked down on people's privacy, the counter-culture emerged, and people started rebelling for no reason. This has continued to the present day.

Another reason: birth control. It's basically eroded our morals by saying that anyone can do anything with whoever they want, with no penalty. In the old days, guys either respected girls or they were considered rude and shunned by society.

Third: "ghetto" culture. I don't mean to offend anyone, but it is my sincere belief that instead of promoting tolerance, equity, and justice, it promotes sex, drugs, and violence.

There is a break down in family values, Parents , have their own life and the children are unsupervised, babysat by Tv and video games. And allowed to come and go when they want with no guide lines. If the parents don't care, then kids rebel, They need structure in their lives and having parents that cared enough to be there for them, talk to then, acknowledge that they have feelings and listen to them, would go a long way in cutting down on the crime and violence.

Close-knit families are missing. If these individuals had a family (someone they could turn to for emotional support), it wouldn't be happening. Society these days places emphasis on individuality. Since many people can't turn to their families like way back when, they turn to society and therefore become statistics of crime and larceny. For example, there are many "latch-key kids". These kids come home to no parents or parents who come home whenever after working late or doing whatever. They don't make the time to get to know their kids. Child feels neglected, therefore turns to violence..That's just one example. I could go on forever...

Compassion. People have become frightened, selfish sheep. It's become far easier to exploit one's fellow man to get ahead (whatever that really gets you) than to climb the ladder on one's own merits. We, as a society have lost hope and faith that the noblest part of the human condition will shine brightest at the end of the day. We have grown accustomed to being ruled by our fear. Of course that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Nothing is new under the sun.
These things have been going on since we were apes, and learning to be less of an ape and more of an intellect is taking, unfortunately, a long period of time because we are a still motivated by selfishness and greed.
