I think my carb is getting too much fuel, do I need a pressure damper?

I got a universal pump and just hooked it up to the carb and ignition.

you need a fuel pressure regulator and set it at no more than 7 or 8 lbs. pressure, you can't run an electric pump on a carburated car without one.

You must have bought a universal pump intended for a fuel injected car, this pump puts out about 40psi, way too much for yours. Get one that is low pressure, 5-10psi.
