They tried to escape their parents, and tried to avoid working.
Board games like checkers and chess have been around for a long time, as have easy to learn card games like fish and rummy. Children played with marbles, dolls, lead soldiers, toy boats, hide and seek, etc. They played softball and baseball and dodgeball. They swam in warm weather and skated in winter, and played with pets.

I know the perfect solution if you are just starting with woodworking and also if you have already experience with it. I reccomend to give a look to this website ( woodworkingplans.kyma.info ) You can find a lot of woodworking plans and you will be able to manage the projects with a CAD/DWG software. It allows you to modify the projects and to alter the arragements. If you are a beginner this is the easiest way to start, it's the best approach to woodworking; and if you already have experience you will find a lot of ideas and inspirations to improve your abilities with woodwork. I'm sure that you will love it!

There were so many woodworking plans with this collection and you will not believe this but there are over thousands plans in the one package deal. Go here https://tr.im/ManualOfWoodworking
This is really something to find that many all together. For someone like me who is just really starting to get involved with woodworking this was like letting me loose in a candy store and telling me I could have anything I wanted. That was my dream when I was a kid.

Monopoly I bet. Listened to radio. Caught fireflies and put them beneath their shirts. Whittled and spit and whistled and played baseball. Climbed trees. Stole a watermelon. Went to a movie. Bellyflopped into the swimmin hole. That reminds me I need a new swimsuit, this old one's got big holes in both knees.

What about the knitting spools? My mother was a child in the 20's and says it was one of her favorite items along with making rag dolls.

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.
