They have really big goldfish and really tiny ones at petsmart. Why are some so big and others so small? There the same kind of fish. Will the small ones grow to the size of the big ones with time?

The large ones taste a bit peppery.

Just the size and age. Pick out fish you really like. But if you like the small ones, I suggest you save the money and give them two months -- they will be just as big as the larger ones. I also like to buy them smaller so I can know they are taken care of well. The larger ones cost more because they are bigger and some people want them bigger for display, but they are just a little older. Make sure you give them room to grow, these are the same fish just at different ages, and they get to be about eight inches long or so -- they will suffer and die young if you don't give them space. They are awesome pets and fun to watch grow, so you won't regret it:)

The smaller ones are younger. With time and proper care, they will grow. Please keep in mind the final size when purchasing any fish, and goldfish can get quite large. For example, here's a link to a picture of a 15" oranda:

add: Don't expect yours to get that big, but that can become rather large.

Generally speaking the only real difference is size. There is the school of thought that the smaller one's are culled at the breeders at a smaller size and therefore may not be genetically able to grow as large, but I discount that in most cases because most breeders breed from one set of genetic stock and simply grow fish to different sizes to meet customer demand.
