If you believe in evolution, which this question most often seems to have an under"laying" connotation of... The egg, very simply because in evolutionary terms, the very first chicken hatched would have to have come from something that was almost a chicken but not quite. Perhaps off by a gene.

Of course then again, if you think about it, actually this question could more be taken as a debate opener for whether you believe in evolution (the egg) or creation (the chicken).

There are several answers to this. Your answer depends on your faith. To creationists the answer is a young, adult chicken. To anyone else the answer would be the egg. In evolution, something very much like a chicken, but not quite a chicken, laid a chicken egg.

The egg came first. Eggs were a method of offspring incubation long before chickens emerged from evolution.

The egg, because from an evolutionary standpoint the egg was around long before the chicken.

egg, cos another species that the chicken evolved from layed an egg that was mutated and instead of looking like itself it looked like a chicken. because this species was more adapted it was more likely to survive and therefore more likely to breed producing the species of the chicken.

but if you are on about when it was 1st classified a chicken it would be the chicken before the egg. because man would have had to see a chicken to name it one

Neither because they evolve together.

Some question require answers that are not YES or NO or BLACK or WHITE. The Universe is very complicated and the answer to this question is not a simple one. The idea that the things are created in a instance is based on archaic religious believes. You can apply the same logic to a Black Hole, a Star or an Galaxy. The elements that created this objects came from previous objects.

The egg.

The chicken is a mutated offspring of some other fowl. That other fowl laid an egg, and much to its surprise, a chicken emerged.
