hi this is a 1982 yamaha xt200j and had been recently restored..we finally got it running...most of the time. well, here we go., to get it running the first time i have to rev the throttle a little bit and kick. if that doesnt work then i put a little gas in it and then do that again...that usually gets it running. (all with the choke on). Then, once it is running i have to rev the throttle or else it will die(this part< is with the choke pushed in after running.) then as soon as i put it in gear (clutch in) it starts to die so i have to almost pop the clutch to get it going...then when i slow down from about third gear to stop..(with the clutch in) it dies........after getting it started again i was coming back home going along merrily at a steady speed (30) when,......the revs just slowly went RRRRRrrrrrr.....(down).and died. i am dumbfounded about that one but non the less..oh and i do have seafoam running through the tank currently. all help appreciated.

oh and at the beginning when i say "put a litlle bit of gas in it" i meen the spark plug hole

i have 93 octane in the tank WITH a small amount of seafoam which if you know anything about it, it says right on the can
~injector cleaner
~carburetor cleaner
~fuel stabilizer
~frees lifters-rings
~de-icer anti gel
~upper cylinder lube
~dries oil and fuel

as far as adjusting my cables, i adjusted the throttle until the slack was up and theres a minut amount of play... and the clutch i adjusted so that it is a half an inch from touching the handle bar grip when pulled in. <

OK, so here it goes, the not starting up at first sounds to me like a main jet is clogged in the carb and the best way to fix that is to take the carb apart and put an air gun up to the jet. then the bike dieing after running and being put into get sounds like the clutch needs to be adjusted and if its all the way out it needs to be replaced. and the bike dieing in the trail sounds like another carb problem, it sounds like the floats might have a small leak in them and so they are filling up and flooding out the motor, and the best way to check that is to take the floats out and put them in a bowl of gas or water or something and look for any bubbles, if there are any you need to replace them and if not check to see if the spring were it attaches to the bowl is working properly. i hope this helps i know how much that **** sux and how frustrating it is

Just cleaning the carb with WD-40 will not get all the ports clear.
Remove the carb and bring it to a shop to have it professionally soaked in a carburetor acid bath.
Then drain the tank of all that crap and fill it with premium gas.

now I'm not 100% sure but if you want to try simple first. It sounds like you need to adjust you're idle screw and you're clutch cable.
