(x-2)(x^2 + 3x - 8)
= x(x^2) + x(3x) + x(-8) + (-2)(x^2) + (-2)(3x) + (-2)(-8)
= x^3 + 3x^2 - 8x - 2x^2 - 6x + 16
= x^3 + x^2 - 14x + 16

x^2 + 3x - 8

x - 2

-16 -6x -2x^2

-8x 3x^2 x^3

x^3 + x^2 -14x + 16

Multiply the like terms; then add as in traditional muliplication

(x-2)(x^2+3x-8)
the first thing you do is distribute the x and -2..
x^3+3x^2-8x-2x^2-6x+16
then, combine similar terms
x^3+x^2-14x+16

(x-2)(x^2+3x-8) distribute (x-2)
x³ + 3x² - 8x
- 2x² - 6x + 16

x³ + x² - 14x + 16

well x is times, like multiply so the first one must be 2 xs and the next one looks like 24 xs at the end and 2 xs in the middle, don't know what that ^ is (and it took me ages to find it on the keyboard)
it looks like 28xs might be the answer

that's one hell of a sum better put approx after the answer just in case I was an x or two out.

EDIT Oh blimey I've just seen that lot above me, they have made things even more complicated than you had them.

How about you do your own homework instead of posting every problem. I've noticed you've posted 3 of your homework problems RIGHT IN A ROW. Thank you.

(x-2)(x-2)(x+4)
((x-2)^2) (x-4)
This is to simplify, to solve is (x^3)+(x^2)-14x+16

(x^2+3x-8) is unfactorable, if you need it factored. ;-( Make sure you copied it right, that could be the problem
