Well since you're getting a lot of smart-a*s answers, I figured I'd give you a real one.

One thing we learned in Vietnam is never to fight a war in a jungle environment. Even though the U.S. should have obliterated the outnumbered Vietcong forces, they failed to take into account the "home field" advantage. U.S. forces had a hard time using their technological superiority in such a confined and primitive battlefield, and it's the main reason why we never were able to overwhelm the much smaller enemy. And it's sort of ironic we learned this lesson this way, because it's the exact same way the Colonists defeated the British back in the Revolutionary War. Just because an army is smaller, doesn't mean you can necessarily beat them. Sometimes the home field advantage is much too difficult to overcome.

Also, we learned not to drop Agent Orange on our own troops. A lot of them developed health problems in later years (such as former governor Jesse Ventura) and it was attributed almost solely to the use of Agent Orange back in Vietnam. So we learned not to use chemicals and gasses when our troops are nearby.

not much, unfortunately...

(edit)...2 lessons that SHOULD HAVE been learned is

1) if you're going to 'liberate' a people, first make sure they WANT to be 'liberated'

2) at the very least, make an effort to understand the basics about the country, the people, the history, the language, the culture...not just the geography...

I think they learned about the danger in using a draft to supply the military. That was a major reason behind the hippie movement.

Zip, America has learned nothing, which is why we are now in Iraq, with no end in sight.

Based on what is happening in Iraq, it seems they didn't learn anything.

Nothing apparently. We are making the same mistakes and using the same tactics in our current government.

Tricky Dick is just the VP this time around.
