Well, I was going to say inside with everyone else and show you a picture.
I found this;
http://www.absolutecar.com/windowTinting.html
It looks like they apply the tint to the outside of the glass, though it may have been done for picture purposes.
I look around as maybe there something new I not hear about. But, I say this may be because it make for a better picture, not that it applied to the outside.
Yea, I think the above just for show.
Here a link to a Video on how it done.

Factory tinting is part of the glass. It's usually better to go with factor tint due to legal issues. Your state may have certain tint laws. So if you go to get a sticker and have tinted windows they can make you take it off. Aftermarket window film is applied to the inside of the glass. Some states allow you to use this as long as it's not to dark.... Good Luck hope this helped.

Factory tint is a part of the glass and on inside or outside it is both . Some tinting places go inside and some go outside depends on tint being applied and car that it is being applied to . Tints you buy from auto parts store are mostly inside do-it-youself tints hope that helps

Window tinting from the factory is part of the glass, but having it done at a window tinting business it is applied to the outside of your glass on the rear windshield, the front windshied for the sun block strip on the top is done from the inside, the inside windows are done from the outside I believe.

WOW!
Film is alway on the inside. .always. There are tinters that lay the film on the exterior when they cut out the window pattern. Then. .they bring it inside the car, flip it around and VOILA!
The weather and UV would quickly ruin the films had they installed on the exterior. UV inhibitors are built into the adhesives and the film to protect them or if you use cheap films. .delay the purple effect.
Window Films protect from skin cancer even in a clear version like UV Shield.
