...do you like it when everything is explained? Or do you want things unexplained and open ended to your own interpretation?

I believe it's good to have most things explained, but the cliche mystery ending is agonizing. Countless mysteries end with a detective or whatever in a room with all the suspects as they explain their reasoning and then point out the criminal.

I think a great example of a mystery is any Sherlock Holmes story. I'm not even sure how to describe them, but they're believable.

A mystery almost by definition has things explained. Some minor plot points (e.g. who the hero/heroine picks for a love interest, etc) might be left unexplained, but the majority of the plot is wrapped up before the end.

No, if the book is a "mystery", then solving the mystery should be the point. I want things explained. If some things are left to the reader's interpretation, that makes it a different sort of book.

I want the mystery solved. It can be a little open ended to your own interpretation, but I want to know "who done it"!!

In my opinion, having the mystery solved is a very important event in a mystery book. To me, when everything is solved, it seems better that way. When it isn't solved, it's like the mystery has no ending.

I prefer the mystery itself to be completely solved but I don't mind if subplots leave loose ends open for my own interpretation.

I truly like to know the end of that particular mystery; but with a twist that finding out the mystery's solution leaves open another tiny little window into another mystery. ... to be continued ! maybe.

I like it when its explained. If its unexplained I've got 2 guess & I might not be good at it & miss out on some interesting explanations.

I prefer when everything is explained and all wrapped up. However, the books I tend to dwell on are the ones that leave a few things unsaid or undone.

There is no point to a mystery that isn't solved. That would be real life, not fiction.
