Ok lets calm down here a bit. Not near enough information to be saying replace the transmission. First, manual or automatic. Second, if its manual, will it go into gear with the vehicle off. Third have you checked the transmission fluid (manual or automatic). Fourth has she been having problems with it shifting prior to this latest problem. and finally,,,,, unfortunately Mazda DID have problems with their 5 speed overdrive trannys in the late 80's early 90's. Usually started with trouble getting the transmissions to shift into 3rd or 4th gear. good luck!

I am guessing that car is an automatic? Most of the other answers covered most of the potential problems. If the car is a stick, your clutch may be bad (slipping).

I have run into two cars where the splined part of the drive shaft had slipped out of the CV joint. With the car in gear and running, check to see if both inner CV joints are turning or stationary. If one is turning, but the shaft is not turning, or, the shaft is turning, but the outer CV is not turning, the splines of the shaft have slipped out of the CV joint.

Also make sure the inner CV joint is installed all the way into the transmission and the outer splined part of the shaft is not turning freely inside the wheel hub. Have seen that once.

Sound like the transmission, car to old to put allot of money into it.
Check the transmission oil level and color, next is to drain the transmission oil pan into a oil change pan but do not dump the oil until you inspect both pans for metal and a black grit.
Metal chunks are bad news and the grit is a maybe, but changing the oil is a cheap way to find out and maybe make it work again for awhile.
It has worked for me several times,

Yeah the answers might be right but I had one that the brake lining rusted onto the drum and car wouldn't move. To check, put trans. in "N" release brake, try to push car a few feet. If it won't move jack up one wheel at a time until you locate locked up one then pull wheel and beat on brakes with a hammer to break rust loose!

Lots of unanswered questions.
1-auto or stick
2-any fluids on the ground
3-if auto what does the fluid on the transmission fluid dip stick look like, smell like, or what is the level.
When you say "will not go in" do you mean will not go or will not allow you to move the shifter level.
I guess you can edit your question to elaborate on my questions and I can edit my answer to respond.
Don't give up, are we having fun yet?

Does the shifter move to position for the different gears ? Is the cable broken ? check the fluid level but you may need a new tranny.

1st things first, check fluid level while running. Add if neccesary. If not, probably tranny is no good.

check fluid level first, then shift linkage, if that doesn't help you will have to have a mechanic look at it.
