It's a legal document that a lot of especially wealthy people file before marriage that outlines what would happen if they were to get divorced.
It usually involves how much money and assets each party will be able to get, or what they will forfeit should they be caught cheating etc....
Some people think this it's tacky, that both don't expect the marriage to last.
Some think it's just smart, so they don't have problems IF the marriage doesn't work so the divorce process goes smoother, and/or cut down on those just looking to get hitched for a payday in the end.

ok, I'll weigh in because my views have recently changed on this. I have always believed that prenups show a total lack of trust in the person whom you are SUPPOSED to most be able to trust. Not to be pessimistic, but the person that you marry is also the 1 person on earth MOST likely to drag your butt into court, fight over assets, etc. (Been married, been divorced, have kids). If I were to marry again, I think a prenup might be a good idea, not just as an insurance policy for myself, but more so for my kids so that when I die, they will still get a fair cut of my assets. If I had no kids from a previous marriage, I would be less likely to do the prenup, but it's still not a bad idea to look at what you both have up front, if there is a BIG difference, & one side could stand to gain alot, a prenup should be considered.

prenuptial agreement
n. also called an antenuptial agreement, a written contract between two people who are about to marry, setting out the terms of possession of assets, treatment of future earnings, control of the property of each, and potential division if the marriage is later dissolved. These agreements are fairly common if either or both parties have substantial assets, children from a prior marriage, potential inheritances, high incomes, or have been "taken" by a previous spouse.
Hope this helps.

Its a prenuptial agreement. An agreement entered into by a couple before they get married that basically says what the conditions of the marriage and any divorce might be. Its usually entered into if one or both of the individuals have a great deal of assets prior to the marriage.

Pre nup refers to a "pre nuptual" agreement. Wherein you have a written contract with your soon to be spouse which clearly states what property, monies etc would be excluded from a divorce. In other words, if you were heir to a lot of money, you would have the spouse to be agree that it was not to be part of community property etc.
