i love Lovecraft too. Obviously, King takes some beating but the book that scared me most ever was "House of Leaves" by Mark Z Danieleski. dare you to read it alone in a dark house facing a cupboard. its very original and theres no monster as such, but it messes with your head.
failing that, the "Keep" by Paul Wilson is excellent. Michael Mann made this beautifully flawed art film from that that is worth a watch...

The Stand by Stephen King (are there any bad books by him?). Anything by Ray Bradbury. Edgar Allen Poe, Ann Rice, peter straub, (the talisman by stephen king and peter straub. Robert McCammon, Dean Koontz and of course Clive Barker. Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin. I could go on and on. Enjoy!

I am a Stephen King fan from the word go. His books SOMETIMES THEY COME BACK; DREAM CATCHERS; IT; & DESPERATION are really spooky. Brian Lumley has the Necroscope series : NECROSCOPE, VAMPHYRII (NECROSCOPE 2), THE SOURCE (NEC. 3), & DEADSPEAK (NEC. 4). And John Saul has some weird ones , too: SUFFER THE CHILDREN; THE BLACKSTONE CHRONICLES; WHEN THE WIND BLOWS, etc, etc. These can all be found at www.barnesandnoble.com in paperback for an average cost of $7.99. Just an extra note--I didn't read Lumley's books at night. :) Another one I didn't read at night was Ed Kelleher & Harriet Vidal's MADONNA.

I highly recommend Jeff Vandermeer's City of Saints and Madmen.
It's really nothing you'd expect it to be. On a different level than most horror, and even more satisfying, I think. Ha, it's hard to explain--which is pretty much this book in a nutshell.
