They both have been reguarded as the best do to the fact that Lynyrd Skynyrd's huge 3 guitar solo that stays on beat all the way through! and Led Zepplin's melodic intro can take your breath away!

Stairway to Heaven is the best, but in my opinion it should be retired (more than it is). Stairway to Heaven is a song that everyone should know, and that everyone who plays guitar should master. However, one should play this song in front of people. Retire it, and bring it back next century.
Freebird is a little different. It's a wonderful song, but there's a lot of comedy behind it. It is ok to listen to Freebird in front of people. For fun. Nothing else.
No band should cover these songs. No one could ever master what Led Zep and Skynard did with these songs. Trying is not only a waste of time and energy; it is an insult to the writers and musicians.
But... that's just my opinion : )

Freebird is way to long to be the best. Stairway to Heaven is intriguing and has a much better beat to it.
