Neutral safety switch COULD be the culprit?
The one on the tranny....
Look carefully at the wire going to it for frayed or rubbed through insulation.

Year make and model would be helpful, but I suspect a problem with the shifter interlock system. Another possibility is a wiring short at the steering column or the transmission neutral safety switch.

There could be a short in the electrical system, or 2 wires touching shorting out the ignition feed.

what kind of car?,the wire running feeding the ignition may be caught up in the shifter mechanism causing it to ground out, thats my best guess.
