I think it's mainly because of two things. One, they are fairly cheap and to, people are given so much bad information about them. When you consider how many ill informed stores will tell people bettas do well in the little 1/2 gallon or smaller containers with no filter, no heater and no quality regular maintenance it's no wonder people that don't bother to research bettas before buying one fall for it and buy the fish to take it home and kill it. Well cared for a betta will live 4-5 years easily. A previous poster mentioned 2 years as a long time. That's an example of the poor information I mentioned.

bettas are easier to care for as they don't have many requirements other than water and food. a guppy and tetras would need a larger space to live and a filter. of course the betta would be happier in a larger space too.
i don't know what kind of space you can provide but with a 10 gallon tank you could easily have a betta AND guppies or tetras -- decisions decisions. a 20 gallon tank and have guppies and tetras and a betta.

I will have to once again agree with MM. Alot of people have no clue about how to take care of Betta's. They are tropical fish and need to be in warm water. The only reason they are placed in those tiny cups in the pet stores are because they are very aggressive with other male Betta's. I have had many Betta's over the past years and they still amaze me with their personalities and beauty. Here are a few web sites with correct info on Betta's

Guppies and Tetras are beautiful, I breed them, but they don't have the wide variety of types of fins. Sure, Guppies have just as large of a variety of colors, however, you don't see a Guppy with the pink and purple color like the Betta. Betta's are larger than Guppies and Tetras, and with their plumage they are easy to see and I nice decoration, rather than a pet for most.

Yes, but your tetras needs a heater, your guppies, Betta's or Goldfish do not. With a Betta you don't need a tank a fish bowl is OK a good size one & no heater needed. I will not say it's good to put guppies or tetra's in a fish bowl it is not.. But yes, they are also easy to care for .. Are you going to put them or it in a tank or wanting to put them in a bowl, you did not say ??

Cause people want the pet without hasle of taking much care of it, you dont need expencive filters, and they look cool, you put them in a tiny bowl and it takes 5 minutes to clean it.
If you want a cool fish, I myself like Ropefish, they're around 10 bucks, which can be expencive for a fish, but they look so cool, My friend had a dinosuar eel that would eat other fish, that was cool to haha
My mothers tank had Neons, Lemon fish, a few Tetras and some Zebra fish it looked really nice

Bettas are probably the most popular fish, next to Guppies.
Listen to LuvinLife and MM, they gave very good answers.

Bettas are more popular because people who don't care to actually learn anything about fish, somehow manage to keep them alive for a while.
Bettas are more popular because people actually believe it's okay to keep them in tiny bowls, and because of this they make beautiful, convenient decorations for their desk at work or their bathroom. And when they die, well, they're cheap enough to replace. No biggie.
"Real" fish take work- actual tanks with filters and such.
I mean, who could be bothered, right?

I think male Bettas are popular because they're a really nice looking fish. They come in all kinds of colours, real easy to care for (after all they can live in a cup!!), and they're cheap.

Bettas are very pretty, they don't dirty up the tank as fast as goldfish do, and they're smart and affectionate. The last one I had seemed to "greet" me when I walked into the room.
