I have a single male betta fish in a 1/2 gallon tank. On the surface of the water (along the rim of the water surface) are small bubbles. Many of them seem to be clumped together. Do you know what this about?

Yup. It's a bubble nest. It's where he'd stash the eggs if he had a chance to breed.
If you decide to give him a girlfriend, put them in at least a gallon tank and be sure she has lots of plant matter to hide in where his fins prevent him from getting at her or he'll likely kill her.

Breeding bettas sounds cool but it is hard and frustrating for a newbie and often ends in the death of the female and rarely produces young, if it does, they rarely get big enough to see. I don't suggest it, just enjoy your male.

It is actually rather cool to watch the breeding process, the female gets really bright and acts flirty, then she rolls over and the male squeezes her with his fins and squeezes the eggs out. The eggs fall to the bottom of the tank and he goes down and picks them up in his mouth and puts them in the nest. He then protects the nest (often killing the female, who should actually be removed from the tank as soon as the eggs are laid). There is special food for the babies, which I have always had a hard time finding locally (I did all this before the internet was a shopping mall) and the few times I got babies they died.

Yep its a bubble nest however, he shouldn't be building one because he's not got a female to build one for, so saying that he's more likely struggling for oxygen in the water and having to breath more atmospheric air to survive, while Betta's gourami's have this ability, it is a survival function for low hot water. So not the norm i would suggest your fish needs a larger water surface area to live without stress

Thats a bubble nest. He makes it for the girl betta to lay eggs in. Its perfectly normal.

It's a bubble nest in which he places the eggs into. This means that he's ready to mate. If you want betta babies, then add a female in the tank. If you don't, it's ok. He'll be fine without one.
