What do you do about a lumpy, bumpy lawn?

Our lawn is all lumpy. Is there anything I can do to help even out the soil? Other than starting over completely or resodding?

You can try laying top soil directly on your lawn, but not thick enough to bury the exisiting growth and throw out seed. Your exisiting grass should continue to grown, and the seed should fill in any bare spots. You may have to do this again in about 6 mos, but it should do the trick.

I had to deal with this in a sod lawn once. Depending on the quality of the turf, you may be able to edge out the affected area on three sides, and peel back the turf. Grade out the high spot and roll the turf back. If this is not feasible, remove and discard the turf in the affected area, level, and reseed with a mixture of appropriate seed for your area and bagged compost. Mix all in a wheelbarrow. If this is unappealing, you can wet the area thoroughly and roll over it with a 3/4 filled lawn roller, available for rental. Of the three methods, #2 is the most practical if you are not starting with a "showlawn". #3 may or may not work depending on the roller weight. Driving your truck over the area as suggested elsewhere may work, but could cause compaction problems that outweigh the benefits of using the truck as a roller.

If you have a garden tiller till down the humps and level with a rake.
Laugh if you will, but, here is what I did I waited until we had some rain to soften the dirt.
Not too wet, then I took my truck and rolled it over the humps I even used my riding mower to do this . It worked.
