Try Pensacola, Panama City, Navarre, Ft. Walton, Destin, San Destin, Gulf Breeze, Panama City Beach. I don't know about CHEAP, but there are nice places all along the Florida Gulf Coast. You might try looking at CRAIGSLIST for these areas - All the ones I listed are between Pensacola and Tallahassee. http://pensacola.craigslist.org/

A very important part of your question is: just how close to the beach, do you consider close? You might take a look at New Smyrna Beach, just south of Daytona Beach. It's nice, quiet and the tourists that come down are not the college age crowd. But, if you're looking to live on the beach side of the Intercoastal (the Intercoastal Waterway is basically an inland water way that runs north to south along the coast line and usually no farther than 2/3 of a mile from the ocean), then it's going to cost more than if you were west of it. If you consider 20 miles away from the water still close, then you can look at DeLand...just about 20 miles or so directly west of New Smyrna. It's a college town (Stetson University), but it's small and not a real problem (I lived there for 10 years).

Florida is a big place...you didn't say where...some places are super expensive, others are getting more and more expensive as time goes on. Determine where you want to live and then go to rent.com. Remember that salaries and hourly wages are (from a recent survey) one of the lowest in the country. Whey you come to Florida they will tell you that the wages are low because you are paying for the sun. If you will be working for an hourly wage you might want to choose to live with a friend to share expenses. Here where I live the cost for an apartment is about $600-$1,000 so with the rent you want you're not leaving yourself much leeway for continuing increases in cost of living.

i have found craigslist is almost always the easiest way to find a good place at your price. you have to be careful, because there are occasionally scammers, but more often than not, you will find a good place quickly at the right price.
other than that, you could lookup a rental agency in the area(use a yellowpages or do an internet search for "rental agency "), although they will charge a fee for finding your apartment.
Sometimes newspaper listings are OK, but they're not as good as craigslist.
