Baldness has minimal effect on survivability, so natural selection doesn't weed it out. The hair on our heads itself has basically no function and is an evolutionary relic from when we had fur.

Baldness is more common in men than women because the gene is recessive and on the X chromosome. Women have two X chromosomes, so the dominant gene on the other X chromosome usually covers it up. Men only have one X chromosome, so if they get the gene it is expressed.

Baldness seems to be determined partially by environmental factors such as diet as well.

The gene for baldness is seen more often for men than for women because the gene is dominant in men and recessive in women.

if A=bald and a=not bald
then a man would be bald with AA or Aa
but a woman would only be bald with AA

The explanation is there is a gene that has evolved that codes for baldness and it has been passed down through generations.

Women are affected by balding as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Male_pattern_baldness

There are no "mistakes" in evolution. If a trait is not favorable it dies out.
