I haven't bought GW yet but I plan to soon enough. I was thinking about what professions to go for (and this is just the regular GW, not factions or nightfall). When I played Ragnarok Online, I went with a Rogue / Stalker, so I'm thinking about going with Ranger for GW.

Is a Ranger any good? Total crap? What would you suggest to combine with it? I tend to like dealing a lot of damage, and perhaps even switching between ranged attacks and melee attacks. I'm thinking maybe Ranger / Elementalist? Not sure if that's good or not though. Any advice on Guild Wars would be just great, because I honestly have no idea what I'm doing.

Rangers are pretty good, decent gameplay and all, not a bad choice. You said you like to deal alot of damage? Then I would chose the elementalist because they are the highest damage dealers in the game. And because most skills they have are spells that means that foes cannot block or evade your attacks and you don't have to worry about your energy because you have energy storage and the attunements skills (fire, water, etc.)
A Ragner/Ele wouldn't be that bad. I don't think it would really get the most out of the elementalist skills. The only thing I would think they would use is the skill conjure (frost, flame, etc) to deal i think it is 9...17 extra damage.
You will just have to play all of the proffesions and see witch one you like the most.
A good starter class would be the warrior. They have highest armor count and they can take a beating. They also have alot of condition causing skills.Bleeding, Deep Wound, Dazed. And if you take ranger for your secondary you can include Poision. But i would suggest monk for the re-useable resurection spells.
What ever you choose i am sure you will like your choice.

Hope I helped!

Ok, since you haven't bought the game yet, you really don't need to sweat about these decisions. You'll receive 4 character slots with the game and 2 more for each campaign you add on.

There are no "bad" professions, although Mesmers may be shunned a bit. A ranger is a good choice. My advice is to try out each one when you get the game and then choose the one that's a good fit for you.
