Rececca I go to Vegas at least a couple times every year; will be going myself in two weeks.
First, when you look for a hotel in Vegas consider this. Almost all of the big hotels on the Strip are great. The most important things to consider are location, price, and in the summer you want to consider the hotel’s pool area. So, stay on the strip in the center of all of the hotel locations so that you can walk to see all of the hotels and casinos, and all of the free attractions. The best place to stay to do that is in one of the hotels on or nearest to Flamingo Rd & the Strip. At that corner is Caesars Palace, Bellagio, the Flamingo, Ballys, and the Paris hotels. I am not saying you need to stay in one of these but stay close to them. I do recommend the Flamingo and Monte Carlo hotels if you are looking for a good price, location and pool. Check their web site which will have a room rate calendar for the next 3 months and you can see when the rates are lowest.
The next thing to consider in picking the BEST place is price. Rates go down in the summer (and again after Thanksgiving, until about mid-January (except new years eve when prices double)). So pick a place that has the best price for you. Caesars, Wynn, The Venetian, and Bellagio will cost top dollar all of the time (like $150 and up) per night during the summer. The Flamingo, Ballys Monte Carlo, and some others you can get into for around $100 (but most times for less) during the low seasons. Its also more expensive in all Vegas hotels on Friday and Saturday nights by $40 to
$60 more. So to get a lower rate plan to go to Vegas on Sunday and stay through Thursday night.
In the summer you probably want to spend some time at the pool areas, which in Vegas are fabulous. All of the big hotels have great pool areas. But the Mandalay Bay, and Monte Carlo hotels have a wave pool and a lazy river for tubing or body floating. The MGM hotel has a huge lazy river and a water fall. The Flamingo has a water slide (not big but nice and refreshing) and also a water fall. The pools at Caesars and Bellagio are good because they have multiple pools and plenty of places to sit. Caesars even has a topless pool areas called the VENUS POOL.
I have stayed at Mandalay Bay, Excalibur, MGM, Monte Carlo, Bellagio, Caesars, the Rio, the Flamingo, Ballys, and Harrahs. But the BEST place for me when I go is who has the best price. Again, all of the Strip hotels are great. So shop the web sites, look at the hotel rate calendars, and go when the price is the lowest. That's the best place to stay on the Strip. Some hotels, like Ballys, Flamingo, and Harrahs, are on the same web site because the hotels are under the same management.
You can probably get lower priced rooms at the Circus Circus, Sahara and Rivera on the north end of the Strip, the Tropicana on the south end, and also at the hotels on Fremont Street. The Tropicana is one of the older hotels that has not been renovated like many others. The other locations will place you a long way from the center of the strip action and you’ll have to take a bus or taxi to Strip action. In addition, if you need to run to the room for a little R&R, it’s a long ways.
You are not going to get comps by just showing up. Comps are earned based on your gambling which is monitored by players club cards. Join all of the players clubs; they are free. You can earn comps on your first trip if you are a big gambler. But Vegas now is not like it used to be; they give away less and less every year. Even the buffet and other food prices that years ago were dirt cheap are now really steep.
About the only way top get free tickets and chips is if you and husband/boyfriend go to a timeshare presentation. The people promoting those will be all over the strip, in hotels and along the sidewalks.

Okay, first of all, the only way to get comps is to spend money gambling. The casinos don't come up to you in the airport and say, "Hey stay with us and we'll give you free tickets to Blue Man Group/Cirque Do Soleil/Celine." Doesn't happen. The way to get it is to join the players' club wherever you're staying and play there and get rated when you check out. (Charge stuff you do in the hotel to your room.)
As far as package deals go - the best deal I've seen is on www.vegas.com - it's thru UsAirways and often $300-$400 cheaper than Expedia, etc.

Check Expedia but compare to other sites - I was just checking out the Bellagio from SFO with air and hotel and for about 300 you get airfare plus 2 days stay at a 5 star......Ive never seen it this cheap. Expect to pay more if you want lake view or any upgrades.

My wife and I go about 4x per year. I've had good success booking packages through the airlines, particularly US Air and Southwest. They have packages, you can save money, and by utilizing the airlines' packages you have access to some of their preferable flights, and sometimes they also have specials. I've never been burnt going through the airlines. I've also used Expedia and Travelocity with success as well, but I've found that access to the best flights is somewhat limited compared to booking directly through the airlines.

zippy is right comps aren't given just for showing up.
as far as deals.....I go a couple times a year and i don't book so called packages.....I have always booked my own airfare through the airlines website....and always book rooms with the hotels directly...seems he best rates are booked through them directly.
