Take away the credit cards or close your credit accounts. Better a closed account than a delinquent one.

You can HELP him address the issue. NO ONE can MAKE him do anything. If his has a spending addiction, it must be treated the same as a cocaine addiction. If he is just bad at budgeting, you can address that issue directly. The first factor to consider is that he will NEVER stick to a budget YOU wrote without his input. Try writing a budget at the beginning of the month and asking him to amend it. MAKE him change something in the budget. After you agree to a budget, you BOTH swear not to spend a single penny that is not in the budget without PRIOR approval from the other party.

He sounds like my ex. The children and I never had any new clothes but he actually called me a spendthrift! My parents kept the kids clothed while he went out and bought toys for himself. We went through all of the things that have been suggested above and nothing worked, Get rid of him! You will end up with a very low self esteem because all of it will be blamed on you. There is no way you can win!

I"m not sure how to stop his addiction, but doesn't it usually mask some other underlying problem he has?

Quickly separate any joint credit you have: remove his name from your credit cards and bills, revoke his access to your bills, etc. Have him talk to a legitimate credit counselor. When the creditors come around harassing you both for unpaid bills, if you're the cosignee you will be legally held responsible for his debts even if he skips town.

Why not involve him more in the finances? Sit down and make a budget that you and he can follow together, and let him help you plan it. Then maybe he'll understand how much money you don't have a little better.

It's hard to spend money you do not have access to. If it is that serious of a problem then he should be removed from the accounts and only be given a cash allowance.

Plastic Surgery.

Cut up his cards, take away the checkbook and give him an allowance. Don't keep these things in the house either!

Good Luck!
