A laptop has poor ergonomics is not meant to be used for long hours like a desktop. If you spend many hours on it daily, you will always experience neck muscle pains and before you get to be eighteen, you will have Carpal Tunnel syndrome (severe wrist pains).
If you do not need mobility much and you like to play games, a desktop would do. Cheap gaming power can be had in a desktop. The USB flash drive or an external HDD provides a certain degree of mobility.

All those laptops those people told you about are not cheap, get a Gateway, they might not be Apple, or HP, but they are GREAT first timer computers, I have one that was my first, and I love it, I'm planning to get another Gateway desktop this summer, so make a great choice. Oh yea make sure that the processor is "AMD", they're faster than intel, and they're better for gaming, and multiple applications. So get Gateway with AMD.

Ya I have a great HP, great video card, great display (17'' wide screen) great speakers, great keyboard (backlight) great OS (Vista Ultimate) And its a dual core. You should go with an HP (mine only cost $1200 too!) HP has great laptops, you should look into them.

Get a Macbook from Apple - it won't break, you can't get viruses, there are no fiddly parts to break off, it comes with loads of useful software, and it's great for school.
Hope that helps,

Panasonic Toughbook. Look for one that says "mil spec." "Mil spec" is short for "military specifications." The military subjects them to dropping, rain, shaking, and other conditions likely to be encountered in the field. If it can survive a day in the life of the military, it can survive as your computer... maybe.

a gateway. If you want to watch movies on it you can go to Windows media center. You can also watch tv on it. They kick butt.
