I am a certified teacher and work in a Montessori school. Yes, the child that I will be "tutoring" is young, but I understand the parents concern. Don't worry about why I will be working with a four year old, I've already figured that part out. I am just looking for typical private tutoring rates.

If you are a certified teacher, you could charge up to about $30 - 40 an hour. If you are just an education person who feels confident in tutoring, then I'd go about 1/2 that.
That being said...why on earth would you tutor a 4 year old?

A four year old, sounds like the child is a bit young to tutor.
When I tutored it was for older children and I charged $10 an hour, but that was 15 years ago and I was in high school.
It would depend on how long they want you there, if they will be there and what they are expecting you to teach a four year old. If it's basic things like letters, numbers and basic science I would at least ask for minimum wage, if not more.

I tutored several of my students at the Montessori school. I charged $20-$25 for an hour.
They were all going into first grade or past first grade at that point though. So not sure if that would apply for a 4 year old.

If this is a one hour a day thing, then charge 15 an hour - you will need to make lesson plans and have good manipulatives/crafts to shew that you are not merely babysitting.
If it is just more of a day care/babysitting job for hours a day - you will not be teaching ANYthing except your values and morals through the play and activities around the house. Charge the going rate for babysitting.
In the one you are expected to DO SOMETHING valuable, in the other, you are watching to make sure that the kid does not drink dish soap from under the sink.
Two things, two prices.
Now here is my beef: WHY can't the parents look after their OWN child eh? Eh? EH?
