Corys can be quite skittish when there is a sudden change of light or movement detected. The fact that you have a good hiding place is likely making them quite happy and less stressed. Getting a couple more of the same kind will always make them more happy- but don't compromise the water quality of your tank for the snails. Corydoras are suprisingly hardy fish. The only way I could watch them is when I fed them sinking pellets, and stepped away 4-5 ft from the tank and held very still. They will come out and forage for food. Feed them often for a few days, then change the water about 50%- this may trigger spawning behavior. In the morning's just about the time the light changes- look for some frenzied activity. You may be suprised at how dramatically their behavior changes. Of course- hold still, and move verrry slowly if you want to see them out and about.

If your tank is large enough I would suggest adding 2-3 more peppered corys. They prefer being in groups and will be far more active that way. Sometimes corys will school with other species and sometimes not. Generally speaking the more different the coloration and pattern, the less likely they are to school together.

When I had a betta and a cory in a tank together, the betta would nip at the cory's fins. Do your corys show any signs of fin damage?
