You don't say how old the baby is. Usually the "milk" that is produced at first is a very weak fluid and then 3-7 days later the real McCoy comes in. If she is not getting anything from the pump she may need to pump every two hours for a few days so that her milk does come in. Our hormones normally kick in automatically once child birth occurs but sometimes we have to give mother nature a little nudge. If her pumping every two hours (yes, even at night!) does not help she may want to see her Dr if she really wants to breast feed to be sure she does not have a blockage of the milk ducts going on. Best of luck to your friend, breast feeding is the closest bond you can form with your child not to mention the health benefits for baby.

At only two days her milk has probably not come in yet. She is very likely producing colostrum, which is very important for the baby to receive. It is perfectly normal for her to not respond to a breastpump, because they are not as efficient at removing milk from the breast as a baby is. Have her put the baby to the breast as much as possible to encourage her milk to come it. Make sure not to introduce any artificial nipples, like bottles or pacifiers.

If she is still in the hospital, make sure that she sees a lactation consultant, who can help her make sure that the baby is latching on correctly. If she has left the hospital already the La Leche League (www.llli.org) can help her find someone who will come to her house and help her get started.

Her milk will come in. Mine didn't come in for about 4 days and my daughter is perfectly fine, her baby will be, too!

Give her some encouragement because she is already doing a wonderful thing for her baby by breastfeeding!

if the baby is two days old then NO she doesn't have any "real" milk!!!

right now she still producing colostrum for the little guy

and don't listen to this crap that this is a "common" problem of not producing milk and she cannot breastfeed

she can breastfeed!

tell her to keep at it and in about another day or two she should have her full milk....and baby isn't even hungry right now anyways.....but she should continue to put him to the breast anyways to satisfy his need to suck and help bring in her milk

tell her NOT to give him a bottle or supplement right now

he is only two days old and i can't believe that the nurses haven't advised her of this in the first place

There's been some good advice posted. I just wanted to add that she can call La Leche League's free 24/7 helpline at 1-877-4LALECHE. They can give her some immediate help via the phone and also give her the contact info of a leader in her local area. They have leader's worldwide.

First she needs to relax. With out relaxing her let down reflex will not work. How old is her baby? Has she had this problem from day one?

It is occasionally for milk to dry up on it's own for many reasons. She should see her doctor.

FIRST OF ALL SEE A DOCTOR. THE PROBLEM COULD BE LACK OF NUTRIENTS TO PRODUCE THE MILK OR BABY IS LATCHING ON PROPERLY TO CAUSE A STRONG ENOUGH SUCTION TO DRAW THE MILK. IF IT IS FAULT FRM BABY ASK YOUR FRIEND TO USE GRIPE WATER ON HER BREAST, BABIES LIKE THE TASTE.

1] call lactation consultant at hospital where she delivered.
2] call La Leche
Bring baby and pump to the visit, so they can be sure she is using it properly.

This isn't unusal.

Some women simply can't produce enough or any milk at all. There isn't anything that I am aware of that will make her produce more.

The link below has some more info on this problem.
