the purpose for the rain gutters is to channel water away from the edges of your house. if you don't channel it away, it increaes the likelihood of water accumulation around the bases of your walls, which could lead to rusting and deterioration of the flashing plate at the base of your walls, which could let water into and around your foundation/basement, which could lead to mold and mildew thereby causing health problems and possible rotting of the walls themselves. if you don't want your walls to rot and basement to become moldy leaving everyone in the house sick someday, better to just fix the rain gutter. :-)

It must be repaired or replaced. Without it in proper order, rain water will tend to collect around your house and soak into the ground there. Will eventually cause foundation or basement problems.

If you are talking about the gutter, the horizontal trough along the roof line, I would not just tear it off as you may damage the fascia doing so. If you are talking about the downspout or leader, the vertical piece, I still would not just tear it off but go about unfastening it. Doing without either in place for a while shouldn't hurt anything.
