Not necessarily, however in a close family environment, the old saying" make the mother happy, you make the home happy", is true, since women are usually the most nurturing and openly affectionate ones in a relationship, if you make her happy, she'll make you happy. However the opposite is not always true, if she is loyal and committed and you make her unhappy, there is a possibility that she will hide behind her pride and put on a brave and smiling face while quietly suffering inside, until this festering turns into resentment and the bonds are broken for good. Usually by the time the guy gets that his actions have adversely affected her, while he was taking her granted, it is too late, and she has begun to despise him.
This is my observation, hope it helps.

The strength of a chain is the strength of the weakest link of the chain because the chain breaks at the weakest link and not at the strongest link.
If you agree to the above statement than yes I agree the happiness of a relationship is the happiness of the saddest person in the relationship.

Depends on the relationship. What if you are with a self centered person whose main concern in life is what he wants and he cannot look past the nose on the end of his face.
In normal relationships I would still have to disagree with that statement because although your partners sadness may bring you down you would not be as unhappy as they were.

I certainly don't agree, and that's a bit circular, isn't it? (If you are as happy as they are, they can't be the saddest...)
Anyway, why is this person so sad? Can we do something to help them feel better? Can they do something to help them feel better? I can't see how it can be helpful to go be as sad as they are. If sadness can "rub off," then why can't happiness?

I would say your relationship is as harmonious as the saddest person. But you could still be the one who is not the unhappiest. That's why true mutual breakups are extremely rare.

Well I think that you can not depend on someone else to make you happy. Happiness comes from the inside out.

Totally just like you are only as strong as your weakest link. It sounds silly but it is oh so true. Unless you can become non co dependant and then you can be as happy and you can be.
