I have several programs running on my computer that are configured to receive automatic updates. If I leave it running, but log off my account will the updates still be downloaded and installed?

What do you mean by logged off? If you are connected to the internet and the computer is on then updates will take place. Logged off usually has a meaning concerning a specific site, disconnecting dial up, or stopping your computer.

If you are just referring to running your browser then the answer is you do not have to have it running. You just need to be connected to the internet. This would usually be with a broadband connection. No one leaves a dial up connection going when they are not browsing.
