For just something like that you'd probably appriciate a large hard drive (not for music as much but it would be nice for holding videos and lots of pictures). A low-end C2D or a PD would be good for you also. People (myself included) generally reccomend against Vista, but if you're not doing anything intensive, and have 1K to spend, you might as well since you can afford the hardware to run it fine.
For $900 this should suit what you're looking for: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883107363
If you in the future decide you want to play games or do 3D modeling, get a video card.

A good company to consider is Carbonfrost Systems. I can speak from experience when I say they have the best warranty and service. They will literally build it to whatever you want while keeping the price low. They have computers in all price ranges so you should be able to find one.
Or if you want total custom, then give them your limit and you will get the best computer out of it. Not even newegg or anything can beat it and you would have to hook and install everything up.

For a 1000 dollars you will get the following which I doubt anyone can beat easily and if they do it will be with much inferior parts:
* 400 Gigabyte Hard Drive
* 2 GB Ram
* AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Dual Core
* 2.6 GHz Processor
* DVD±R Burner 18X
* ASUS AMD Motherboard
* TV/FM Tuner Card with Remote
* ATI Radeon Video Card
* Sound Blaster Sound Card
* 600 Watt Supply
* Windows Vista
* Starter Package

Try an Apple MacBook. It'll come with everything you need and you won't have to worry about viruses or spyware because there are zero viruses for Mac OS X (pronounced ten, roman numeral). Check out the Apple website at www.apple.com or drop into your nearest Apple stockist to try one out. You can custom build your Mac to suit you, and it comes in White or Black. I would suggest the standard configuration, which is exactly your budget at $1,099! Trust me, you get more than your money's worth.
Hope that helps,

There are many pcs out there for under $1000 that will do the job for you. Get one with at least 512 ram and for music you should have a CD-RW or DVD RWdrive.

For $1000 or less, I would say Dell or HP for a desktop. For a laptop, I would say Dell or Lenova (IBM Thinkpad). Either way for under $1000 you're pretty much getting all chinese parts from whoever you go with. I like Dell just because they are very easy to deal with should warranty issues arise.
