He is refusing to put any money in my account and does not answer my emails or phone calls. I know I have to get a lawyer because I am unable to support myself, having followed him around the world because of his career, almost twenty-five years. Will a Canadian lawyer be able to garnish funds from his pay in Texas? My name is on jointly owned property in Canada and therefore, I'm not entitled to legal aid. That's tough when you haven't worked for twenty years and have no technical skills at all. Could use some advice.

No alimony in Texas. Just child support for children. Divorce him and ask for the property. You must get a job.

He is what you call a dead beat dad. And yes he does have to pay child support. It makes no difference in the eyes of the law where the heck this man lives. He must not know this or he is not giving you credit to know this and if you didnt you sure do now. Yes you must get a lawyer to get all the paper work done for you and the courts to set the amount to be garnished from him. You will then have court papers for this which will be good for you because if he doesnt pay then you can have arrested for non child support. Show him what your made of and go in fighting mad for the rights of your child.

I don't really know how the laws would work with you being in two different Countries BUT I do know that here in the states, If you have not worked for twenty years and are accustomed to a certain lifestyle, he cannot take that away. Even if you are divorcing. He has to support that lifestyle for at least 1 year.

Note to 'jeancommunicate': no alimony in Texas? That would come as news to the practicing family lawyers here. It would also be welcome news to me personally.
