The poisonous lizard which is native to the desert southwest of the US and Mexico is the Gila Monster or Beaded Lizard, these animals spend about 80% of their life underground but become more active at the surface during Spring. It is their bite which is poisonous. The venom of both these lizards is neurotoxic.
Description: Gila monster
Robust, with a large head and a heavy tail. Its body is covered with beadlike scales. Its color is striking in rich blacks laced with yellow or pinkish scales. Found in arid areas, coming out at night or early morning hours in search of small rodents and bird eggs. During the heat of the day it stays under brush or rocks. It's length ranges from 30 to 50 centimeters.
Distribution: Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, northern Mexico, and extreme corner of southeast California.
Description: beaded lizard
Less colorful than its cousin, the gila monster. It has black or pale yellow bands or is entirely black. Found in arid or desert areas, often in rocky hillsides, coming out during evening and early morning hours. It ranges in length between 60 and 90 centimeters.
Distribution: Mexico through Central America.

By technicality, there are only two poisonous lizards as described above (which I think are technically venomous as its their saliva. Poisonous - bad if you bite it, venomous - bad if it bites you).
However, if you are like most people, the distinction of lizard is not as specific as people who would be able to answer this questions. So you could be referring to newts, which are actually amphibians.
There are little, usually brightly colored newts that inhabit much of the United States, and vary by region. There are rough skinned newts that are HIGHLY toxic (ie: stick your hand in water it formerly was in and you have a paper cut, suddenly there is limited mobility of your whole arm!) but others like the red eft (small red juvenile form of the common eastern newt) are mildly toxic.
Try googling newts in S.C. to see if this is what you are looking for!
Hope this helps!

There are only two poisonous lizards, the gila monster of the S.W. United States and the Mexican beaded lizard. Neither of them is found in South Carolina.
