About two grand. I know that sounds rather a lot but I am afraid that this is realistic.

The UK is incredibly expensive compared to a lot of other countries, it depends on where you are coming from. If you are from the USA you will find it really bad! From Europe you will find prices a little higher than you are used to. If you stay in London then double your prices......
Train travel is really expensive in the UK, don't travel at peak times and research cheaper tickets via the internet rather than paying when you get there. Often you can get a day pass for travel after 10am for a lot less. Underground travel in London is incredibly expensive compared to a lot of European capitals.
I would recommend you look at National Express coaches if you want to travel widely, they are often really cheap compared to rail travel, be warned though - I did Portsmouth to Newquay and it took 11 hours....... (although for about £20).
West Country is beautiful and Cornwall has it all, also you can go straight up the M1 to Bristol and on to Wales from there.
If you stay in Surrey or Hampshire it's easier to get to London and accomodation will be cheaper. There are lots of hostels but the accomodation will be pretty basic. It may be worth looking at some B&B's. We've found some airport hotels (not bad locations) from £15 a night, the rooms are tiny but a good base, they tend to be Travel lodges.

It will cost you somewhere between $100-200 a day. It depends on how much you want to spend and what part of England you are in at that time. Here is a site for hostels in England:
http://www.hostels.com/en/gb.en.html
You need to by a rail card and spending on food. England is expensive, however not so much that you shouldn't go or won't have a good time.
Hope you do go, you will have the time of your life.

you could do it on £800. £25 per night in a hostel, food and spends/travel. basic/cheap food, no nights out etc.
northern england is on average cheaper so head there and spend only 3/4 days in london?

depends how much travelling you do.
Bed for the night in a hostel and food for a day would be £25-35
Then there would be travel and admission charges to places you wanted to visit.
