Go to an Indian restaurant (Asian indian not American Indian), walk around to the back on a hot summer day and stick your head in their dumpster for four hours.

You have just experienced Cleveland on a good day.

For a better place go to Paducah Kentucky, one it doesn't stink as bad, and two they have a juco that is so much better than Cleveland State it ain't funny.

I think the best word to describe Cleveland would be "metropolitan". It's large and diverse enough to have a variety of neighborhoods to live in, a number of good shopping centers, different nightlife hotspots and other things to do, but everything is a bit scattered throughout the region. For instance, you won't find one shopping center or even one area that has everything you might want.

For clothing and apparel you have Tower City Center downtown, which is okay, but most of the destination type retailers are located in the suburbs at Crocker Park just west of Cleveland in Westlake, and Beachwood Place and Legacy Village just east of Cleveland in Beachwood. A good shopping center with unique boutique shopping is Eton Chagrin Boulevard in Woodmere.

There is a very nice grocery store downtown on W.9th Street called Constantino's, and an even larger grocery store called Dave's on W.25th Street just across the river from downtown in Ohio City. The West Side Market is also located on W.25th in Ohio City near Dave's and is a great place to get fresh produce, meats and specialty foods.

For basic everyday things, Steelyard Commons just south of downtown should help you out a lot. Walmart Supercenter, Target, Marshalls, and more big box shopping are located there. Its a brand new development, and retailers are openning up there over time. Its probably no more than a ten minute drive from downtown.

Keep in mind that downtown Cleveland is in transition. It was really bad 20-30 years ago, but in the past ten years there has been a lot of revitalization. Tower City Center, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, restored theaters in Playhouse Square and sports stadiums are all newer large scale projects, but more and more people are now moving into converted loft-style buildings, and streets like W.6th and E.4th have a lot of nice restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues. The city is becoming more and more vibrant and 24 hours, but things are still kind of quiet at times.

Getting around Cleveland by car is really easy and traffic is pretty light. On the other hand Cleveland does have a pretty decent bus and rapid transit system (RTA). That should get you to where you need to go pretty well, and its a great way to get from downtown to places like the the airport, Ohio City, Shaker Square, and University Circle.

I'm from Cleveland and I attend CSU. The city right now is under construction, as is CSU. But I think everything is scheduled to be finished by 2009? I'm not sure. Well depending on where you are planning on living, there are ooodles of places to shop. If you're staying on campus, there is Tower City, which is located at Public Square, it closes early (7pm) there are a lot of shops down there. Cleveland just opened a new shopping center downtown called the Steelyard, I believe there is a Wal-Mart there, but the next closes one is at Severance in Cleveland Heights. (I'm a east sider, so I am not that familar with the west side of town). If you are planning on living on the West side, I do know that the West Side Market is a great place to do your shopping for grocery. Its located at W.25th & Lorain, it is also close to Downtown, so if you're staying on campus you could still do your grocery shopping there. Ohio City and Lakewood are the closest west side neighboorhoods/subburbs, to CSU. Little Italy, Cleveland Heights & Shaker Heights are the closest east side neightboorhoods/subburbs to CSU. There are a lot of great places to shop in Cleveland Heights, there is Coventry, which is where most college students live (mainly Case students and Art students), Coventry, has a lot of little shops you won't find anywhere else. Up the street from Coventry is Severance Center, where there is a Wal-Mart, a movie theatre, Boders Bookstore, grocery store etc... Shaker Square is also a nice place to go for shopping, they too have unique shops you won't find anywhere else in the city. Also pretty new, is University Square,(not to be confused with University Circle) located in University Heights, there is Macy's, Target, Jo-Anne Fabric store, as well as some shoe stores, plus its right next to Cedar Center, which has a bunch of stores. Someone mentioned, Legacy Village, Beachwood Mall they have more high end stores. There is a Apple store in Legacy and a Sephora at Beachwood. If you are on the West side of town, you would go to Crocker Park, the west side equivalent to Legacy, but they don't have the same stores there, just the same atmostshere.
Cleveland is a great city to live, there are a lot of nice people here. I will warn you that it does snow pretty badly here, and it does get really cold here, so be prepared to be frozen! January& February are the coldest months here, don't let the title Spring Semester fool you, it is cold as what downtown, and for some reason CSU doesn't turn the heat up that much, so dress warmly no matter what part of the school you'll be in. Also, it does get very hot in the summer time, so Cleveland weather is that of extremes. I hope you have a great time, and enjoy CSU. Good Luck!

Cleveland is a really great city! Yes, we have walmarts and targets and kmarts. There are really good malls in this area! Like Beachwood Place mall, Southpark Mall, Great Northern Mall, Tower City Mall, Crocker Park, Legacy Village, and more! Cedar Point is only an hour away, and is the best place ever!!!!! You HAVE to go there! The rock and roll hall of fame is a really sweet museum!! You have to go there! Any more info go to Cleveland.com. or you can type something into Google. The people here are for the most part nice. But some of the Ghetto types of people are a little more stuborn and rude. Ignore them. The Cavs are going to win the Championship this year!!! The Indians are doing great!!!! And the Browns' roster promises to have a great season!!!! It should all be amazing!

Cleveland is a diverse city with diverse people... I like the comments from the eastsider.. Lots of good points with shopping, weather and tips on places to go... Westside has good points as well... No one mentioned that we're right on Lake Erie ! Very beautiful, and a very nice parks/recreation system for being a metropolitan city. There's Huntington Beach in Bay Village, Cleveland Metropark Zoo, Science Center, and The Art Museum and Natural History Museum.. Lakewood is nice and although it's a suburb offers unique stores, bars and people. Downtown is starting to shine again with dinner, dancing and nightlife...
Walmarts, Targets and grocery stores are practically on every corner.. You'll be fine no matter if you live eastside/westside....Good luck

Cleveland the poorest city in the country!!!!!
Naw, im just playin its the best city in the country, and my personal favorite considering ive never been anywhere else. Downtown you can shop at tower city, or the galleria or the arcade, which no one mentioned, I take the bus to get around and it is no problem, also the rapid(train) is quite fast and all rapid lines meet at the tower city terminal, and go through suburbs such as east cleveland, warrensville heights, shaker heights, lakewood, and many others. Also crocker park and legacy village are brand new and people seem to enjoy them, great lakes mall is a little ways away in mentor, but is also a nice mall, walmart and target and walgreens and k mart, are on like evry corner in the suburbs, just not so much in cleveland proper.

There is great nightlife if your over 21, on the west bank of the flats radio stations usually hold parties at the clubs and there is also an entertainment district on E4 and euclid avenue, however the street itself is under construction. as well as CSU, however CSU is a fine institution which I plan on attending myself after i finish jc.

Also University circle which has a rapid stop has the art museum(world renowned), health, natural history, kids museum and im sure im forgetting some but ive been to every museum in cleveland and loved them all. The rock hall of fame and the science center are downtown right on the lake and i mean like if you walk 20 feet out the backdoor youll be swimming.

Also, there is the uss cod a world war II submarine, the william g mather an old shipping boat which is cool to take a tour of, and the goodtime 3 which is a 2 hour boat tour on the lake and down cuyahoga river, dont worry the rivers been fire free for a while lol.

If your staying on campus u r in the best position to acces anything in the city by public transportation, if you have a car you can use that but i suggest you at least try out the bus 1 time to see how it is, because its cheap and surprisingly effective.

If you dont live on campus you might not want to live in cleveland at all, maybe look for an apartmnt in euclid or the heights, because an out of towner ( dont take this wrong) has no business living in any neighborhood in cleveland because it will be and all around unpleasant experience unless of course you come from a bad metropolitan neighborhood, in which case you will find people like me who live in these bad neighborhoods to actually be decent people, who just survive differently than mainstream society. Just dont walk or drive alone at night especially if you dont know exactly where your going, because no one will think twice of pulling u out of your car and taking it or snatching your purse.

with that disclaimer out of the way let me also mention nearby attractions including cedar point, which u probably heard of, and geauga lake which is 30 minutes south of cleveland, it is just as fun as cedar point but half the price with roller coasters and water park and animal shows.
Also if you like nature the metroparks are probably the best in the country after all we are the forest city, squires castle is a neat place to visit in the metroparks, it was never completed because the guys wife went off with another man and he hung himself, they just recently took down the hook he used. Also this may sound weird but, lakeview cemetery is a very cool place, it has john rockefeller, louis sockalexis the name sake of the indians, president garfield, ray chapman the only player to get killed in a baseball game and many other famous people, i actually camped there in boyscouts, its much more than just a field with headstones.

So i hope i was thorough enough because thats all the stuff ive done in my 17 years here, and many ive done several times because they are so fun, theres plenty more i could tell u but it probably wouldnt be safe for u to do it not being from here

The schools are the best in the Cleveland area. Great science Olympiad team. Very safe only some DUI cases at night. The community is very diverse (Chinese, Indian, Hispanic, Black, Caucasian). The Metroparks are very close. Great place to raise a family. It is an 20 minute commute to Downtown Cleveland.
