I started a sewing club last year. I asked a craft store if we could use their back room for meeting space and electricity, and they said yes right away. So then I wrote to the community column of my local newspaper and sent public service announcements to the cable access TV station. I made up some fliers and put them up in the library and on the bulletin boards of grocery stores. We had 30 people at our first meeting! We have done lots of charity sewing and taught each other some complicated quilt patters. So go for it! Don't bother to advertise online though, because local people won't see it.
