I am removing my rocks and replacing with sand. Im wuestioning this because Im unsure of how to clean it? Do I just use my rock syphon to clean the sand? Also Im thinking about leaving a layer of the rock under the sand for my live plants, is this a good idea?

Thanks!

You need a syphon and bucket... check out this excellent video that shows you how to clean sand in an aquarium. :)

Just syphon the waste from on the sand into a bucket. Don't worry about sucking up sand, it can be put back in.

If you put a layer of gravel under the sand, the sand will slip through the gravel and end up on the bottom.

Stirring up the sand can damage the roots of your plants. If you do so, do it gently with your fingers.

you take a bucket (it has to be free of chemicals) and fill it 50% or less with sand, 50% water. Then you stir it with hands or a stick and drain the dirty water. Repeat until water stays clean.
I think plants grow better in sand than on rocks.

I usually stir it up and syphon the mulch when it settles, its not a perfect solution but it keeps you just ahead of the game.

No because if you where to clean it, you would have to replace the sand everytime you clean it.
