I heard Kansas City (not sure of owner although there is someone with squatter's rights to a hockey team at the Sprint Center) and Las Vegas (Jerry Bruckheimer as owner and they would possibly play at MGM Grand while an arena was constructed).
While these possibilities are interesting, I think expansion would be a terrible idea for the NHL at this time. In the first place, 32 teams in this league is way too many as they are overextended today. Two, there are enough sub-par markets today (Nashville, Florida, Tampa, Phoenix, Carolina, Atlanta just to name a few). Three, teams are having trouble keeping their top minor league markets stocked and viable; the AHL game is very tough to watch.
More money in the short term from expansion fees can be good, but the dollars run out after a while since it's a one-time fee. It's something like a bad company issuing more stock to raise money but in the end, due to mismanagement, ends up with a share price lower than when the issue was done.
I could get off on a whole Bettman rant but that would be pointless. I don't know why the owners haven't gotten rid of this NBA reject but he certainly is out of touch with the core fans and has no clue how to attract new fans. He really should look into crafting a TV deal that contributes to the revenue pot for the league.
Contraction and team movement would be the best ways to retool the league. Expansion is way down the list of good ideas.

More proof that 1) Gary Buttman has cardboard for brains, 2) the NHL governors can't think beyond the next bag of money, 3) some eh-hole forgot about the Kansas City Scouts and how well they did there.
But really the NHL should add teams in Birmingham, Orlando, New Orleans, Charleston, Richmond, and another team that just rides around Dixie in a bus looking to play challenge matches against some locals boys. I guarantee Gary, if you do that you'll have NBC, ABC and TNN knocking down your door to get a big Tee Vee contract.

Adding 2 teams would not be smart but relocating some teams wouldn't be a bad idea. I know Bettman wants to expand the game but there are some markets where pro sports in general have not faired well. Just look at the Miami market. 2.5 million rather apathetic sports fans. They do not even care when their teams are winning let alone losing. Some cities I would consider for Florida to relocate to, Winnipeg and Quebec, but also try cities like Houston, and seattle Both are places that can easily have a natural rival Dallas v, Houston and Seattle v. Vancouver. Also you might want to look at saint louis. This year they averaged a 59% capacity. That means on an average night almost half their areana is empty.

Kansas City is a lock they will have the Sprint Center up and running in time for next season and since they couldn't get the Penguins they need a team to put in the area. Las Vegas is the other city that is likely to acquire a team. I don't know about putting one there though it will likely not work out. People go to Vegas to gamble and go see shows they do not go there to go to a sporting event. I'd say if an expansion team is going to work send it to Canada they will start out with a huge fan base. I live in KC so while it's not good for the league to expand part of me hopes it does for my own selfish reasons. I know KC will at least have 1 season ticket holder.

after the deal to get the preds to canada flops, winnipeg or quebec city should be first.. vegas and k.c. are on the short list but give them to somewhere in montana... its cold there and there are no professional teams in any sport around for hundreds of miles(like that will really happen) realistically; portland oregon or seattle are logical.... jim balsille isnt too smart or he would wait and save 100 million and have his own team from scratch...mr. blackberry better be nice to nashville or he may be owning a money pit for quite a while because the lease is good for 19 more years and looks like attendance will be up---WAY UP....

They are considering Las Vegas and Kansas City. Nashville will most likely relocate also ... probably to neither of those cities though.

Kansas City would basically be a lock, and likely some other American city. Hopefully this never happens though.
