I normally wear size 32 but the one that I like is pretty tight for the top (2 piece with cross back top and shorts). The sales assistant says I should stick to this as it will expand underwater but it so tight that my ribs are showing and it is difficult to but on...any advice?

Vera get the one that is most comfortable! You should be able to comfortable execute your strokes while wearing your suit and you shouldn't get red ridges in your shoulders under normal activity (I say this because it's not good but I know most competitive swimmers have them anyways!) If the suit feels too tight then it very well may be. While it WILL relax a little, from the sound of things you should go with the 34 just for comfort's sake.

Good luck!

it would be difficult to really tell, it depends on body type and what kind of movement you will be doing. there are different suits for different strokes in swimming. if the top is too tight i would recommend one with thin straps rather than the continuous fabric all around.
