That's normal. Just burning off a little oil you probably spilled.

Well there are many things that I dont know about the mower. Removing the carburetor will only ensure that it will not run. If that was what you thought it was. If that was the exhaust then removing that will not make a difference unless someone spilled directly on it. However removing the exhaust will make it louder and eventually the engine would not run properly without the backpressure the exhaust provides. If it is the exhaust and it somehow had something spilled on it you may be able to clean it off and it will be fine. My best guess would be that the engine has internal problems with valves not seating right and oil is mixing with the gas. As far as fixing the mower goes, if you really dont know for sure what the carburetor looks like you should probably not try to fix it. I would suggest taking it to someone who does this for a living or someone you know you can trust to do the work. It sounds to me like the mower would need to be taken somewhere for repairs or replaced depending on how much needs to be done to it. As I said there are different engine types and it could cost more to repair a four stroke than it would a two stroke. These are just my best guesses given what you have told us online.

Blue and white smoke are usually a sign of oil burning. Black smoke means your burning to much fuel, or not getting enough air. One possibility I haven't read yet that is fairly common in lawn mower white smoke is that the choke isn't shutting off. Also if you've run over anything.. little bit high stump, pipe, or rocks it can bend the shaft that your blade is attached to. The shaft goes into the engine and cause a leak. This is usually accompanied by sever vibration. Piston rings going bad is another possibility. Depending on how ridiculous the amount of smoke is, I would keep running it just making sure you check the oil level every time until you are sure how much you are burning.
