Depending on the shark species will depend on what they eat. Sharks are opportunistic feeders and will usually attack and feed on injured or sick fish. Since sharks rely heavily on their teeth, sharks usually will not risk the loss of too many of their teeth. Some sharks like the great whites will eat seals, penguins and other aquatic mamals including birds as well as injured fish small dolphins when available they have even been photographed eating carcass of dead or dieing whales. while bottom feedersharks feed exclusively on crustations and fish.

Others are filter feeders like the whale shark and megamouth sharks feed on plankton and krill. Some like the nurse sharks will feed on algaes and plant life.

Sharks kept in a fresh water aquarium are not sharks, they are cat fish. Which depending on the type will eat just about anything including plants.

It really depends on the type of shark you're asking about. The world's largest shark, the Whale Shark, eats the plankton just like a whale. Of course the Great White eats mostly larger animals like seals, sea lions, large fish such as tuna... anything that doesn't put up much of a fight, really.

But with this question being located in "Pets," I kind of lean on thinking that you're asking about red tailed sharks, bala sharks, rainbow sharks, and the like. Most "shark" freshwater fish are actually more like catfish, and tend to eat food that sinks to the bottom of the tank. During feeding, you'll probably observe them chasing their food in mid-water as well. So the usual menu applies: Flake, brine shrimp, tubifex worms, blood worms, and even plant-based algae flakes now and again. They aren't picky eaters in the least.

If you have a saltwater tank, then it'd be my recommendation to either purchase a book on the species or to inquire at a pet shop which sells exotic saltwater fish. There are just far too many types of fish wearing the "shark" nametag to accurately answer this question.

I have two sharks one a red-tailed shark the other is a stripped one (can't remember the name of it) I feed them normal fish flakes which probably is not the best diet but I've had them for 4 years and there very healthy. Usually there is specially shark food you can get like dried insects or meaty pellets
