Vista's surface looks really nice but has so much incompatibilities esp. with older softwares. My Office 2003, Corel 12 won't work and so are my hardware drivers. So I don't recommend upgrading yet until after a couple more years when Vista becomes more stable. For now, there's nothing that Vista can do that XP can't. And XP is a tried and tested OS while Vista is a relatively new unproven OS with still plenty of bugs. The choice is obvious.
If you like the GUI interface of the new Vista, you can download this program - Vista transformation pack on this site -
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/Vista-Transformation-Pack.shtml
This way you will have the best of both worlds. A Vista look with the XP engine.

at this point there are alot of different opinions on the matter and you'll find alot of it is personal preference and depends heavily on what you're doing. Vista does have some issues supporting older hardware such as printers and scanners so if you plan on using those you might want to think again about upgrading. Vista is supposedly easier to use though for people who already know how to use XP very well then we have a hard time finding things because microsoft moved some things for Vista. Overall XP is still the better operating system for most people just because of it's ease of use and amazing hardware support. If you can find a computer with XP then by all means go with XP because it'll last you a while.

Right now, Windows XP Service Pack 2 seems to be significantly better than the first version of Windows Vista, but this scenario is fairly normal with Microsoft Operating Systems. Wait until MS puts out Vista Service Pack 1 or even 2 before getting into it, if you already have XP SP2.

hey,
this is really a non-informative question. well, what are you going to be doing? gaming? work? school? these are some questions you need to ponder. vista, right now, is a little buggy and if i have chosen to wait to get vista until they release vista gold edition in another year or so. XP right now works great. so, unless you feel like you want Vista really bad and live with all the problems that comes with vista i would say get it. so i hope that helps some

People need to suck it up. Vista will be the next OS whether we like it or not. Only real difference is that Vista has much better security and looks "sexy". It copied Apples OS so bad. XP is nothing special. Its basically the same thing as windows 2000, just refined more but not by much.
Vista costs a lot too.

Okay, well that depends on your choice.
Currently Vista doesn't support many games because it just came out. All OSs are like that. So, if you are a gamer, stick to XP for now.
If you want power, full strength, choose Vista. Vista has an enhanced protection system, great processors (usually, Viiv, or Core2Duo/Xeon for Desktops)
If you want entertainment, that'll depend on the amound of RAM and processor power. Well, Vista usually has 1-2GB of RAm and good processors. But media center softwares may not be compatible with Vista
it's your choice

I am useing Windows Vista now, and Honestly I hate it. I personally don't believe at this time there is any benifity to useing Vista. If you play games at all, expect to loose as much as 50% of your performance. If you use any specialty software or hardware, expect that to no longer function.
For now, it is best to stay with Windows XP
