According to psychiatrists, it is normal to have fleeting thoughts of wishing you were dead, during very depressing times or high stress times. It is not normal, however, to plan it out, obtain whatever is needed to carry out the act, nor is it normal to remain in that state for an extended period of time, with frequent thoughts of killing oneself. Anything more than an isolated, fleeting thought, should be brought to the attention of a mental health professional.

"I take it that no man is educated who has never dallied with the thought of suicide" Willam James.
C S Lewis recalls being astonished in conversation (during WW2), by a man who had never considered that the world might be futile and pointless, and life not worth living.
They were both shocked. The man that anyone could think that, and C S Lewis that someone could reach adulthood without considering the possibility.

Probably but thank God most of us are too responsible to carry that out. Suicide is a very selfish act and leaves behind a myriad of hurt and questions for the people who loved them. I can see why it is considered a great sin.
